Good Evening All,
I want to send my heartfelt gratitude over for the awesome wounded warrior surf event thrown by DLSA, surf shops/vendors, volunteers, families and the community surrounding San Onofre.
Having just returned from Afghanistan and just moving to the West Coast, attending this event was a breath of fresh air and only reinforced my reasoning for relocating. It was amazing to see our wounded service members and their families enjoying the ocean in a way that only surfing can provide. Smiles, I believe were the theme of the day and they were only made possible by your surf club and the volunteers/community that support it.
It was a pleasure and an honor to meet you all. I appreciate all of your time and hard work to make today such a success. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I hope to see you all very soon.

August 14 and 15, 2010
Well-done DLSA Team! We earned Second place overall at the Oceanside Pier. It was overcast and the ocean temp was a frigid
fifty six degrees, but our team we hot, hot, HOT!!!
OLSC hosted a deluxe venue that coordinated with the Takayama ProEvent and Jr. Super Girl Competition. All who attended enjoyed watching some great surfing alongside pleasurable company. Vendors of all types were set up in the amphitheater area, along with great food and live music. The well-known “Beer Garden” was overflowing with patrons each day, with Josh Rapozo drawing first beer on Saturday morning!
The waves were waist to head high, smooth, peaky, and fun. The wind stayed light, but the sun never broke through. Conditions stayed pretty consistent and the competitors had lots of fun in their heats. We had a rag-tag paddle team, with a lot of heart, that placed sixth. I’d like to thank those who paddled in the cold water once again, YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!
Our tandem teams looked beautiful as usual. Oceanside pier is not the easiest place to show off tandem talents. Each team was graceful finding length of ride and multiple lifts in high tide conditions.
The weekend ended with trophies awarded with an alternating raffle mixed in. DLSA proudly wore their colors and yelled & hooted for our finalists. I think we’re the loudest, most spirited, competitors there. Once again, I am the proud team captain of the mighty D.L.S.A team! GO TEAM!!!

Whether it was a coincidence or just fate, it definitely was fitting that Surfing Pioneer Dewey Weber was inducted into the Surfing Walk Of Fame in 2010, the 50th Anniversary of Dewey Weber Surfboards. The induction Ceremony was well attended by by the public as well as legendary surfers, influential people in the surfing industry and current day surfing icons. Celebrity sightings included Peter (P.T.) Townend who did the M.C. and induction duties, Walter Hoffman, Herbie Fletcher, David Nuuhiwa, Rabbit Bartholomew, " Bob "The Greek" Bolen, and Kelly Slater to name a few.
Invocation
This years Walk Of Fame honorees besides Dewey were: Ian Cairns, Rick “Rockin Fig” Fignetti, Sunny Garcia, Dave Rochlen, Candy Calhoun and Honor Roll recognition for the late Dick Baker.
2010 Plaques
The 2010 Surfing Walk of Fame plaques joined over 100 other plaques from previous years inductee's which line Main Street in front of Jack's Surfshop at the corner of PCH just across from the Huntington Beach Pier.
P.T. introducing Shea Weber
The ceremony started at 10 a.m. and each recepient either personally spoke or were talked about by a friend or relative. The various bio's, stories and lists of contributions that each person made to the sport of surfing was very interesting and awe inspiring. All of them in their own way bettering, evolving and directing the sport, industry and surfing lifestyle to where it is today.
Shea Weber talking about his father
Dewey's son and current President/Owner of Dewey Weber Surfboards, Shea did a great job describing his Dad's contributions to the business of manufacturing surfboards as well as being one of, if not the original surfing hotdogger(s). "The Little Man On Wheels" was as his nickname implies, was one of the first surfers to surf with a more high performance style than other surfers of the day. His different surfing style was quickly emulated by other hotdogger's back then and lended itself and over time eventually evolved into the charging, high performance surfing style of many of today's longboarder's as well as shortboarder's too. The shortboard revolution in the 70's prompted Dewey to develop his own line of shortboard designs, with shapes that to this day still rival the performance of current day modern thruster's. Dewey's surfing, surfboard production innovations and marketing skills all played a huge roll and was a major influence to what the industry has become today.
Una Baker
The other inductee's bio's were also very impressive. Dick Baker's wife Una who many of us know, was there to talk about her late husband and his contributions to the surfing industry. It was good to see our local friend and remember Dick as well. Sunny Garcia had many fans in the crowd and H.B. local hero "Rockin' Fig" got a big response from all his friends there supporting him. And Ian Cairns with his fellow "Bronzed Aussie" buddies, P.T. and Rabbit reminded everybody of that time in surfing when those guys dominated the international pro surfing scene. The days other recipients were remembered very fondly for their accomplishments as well.
"Someone told me that the guy on the right rips" Shea Weber and Kelly Slater.
So overall it was a very nice ceremony for well deserved recipients. Congratulations to the Weber Family, Dewey Weber Surfboards and all the other 2010 Walk Of fame Recipients!

Rainbow Sandals and the Surfing Heritage Foundation Team Up With Limited
Edition Pairs Of Exclusive Sandals.
Proceeds to directly benefit the Surfing Heritage Foundation’s preservation programs
Rainbow Sandals have been equipping discerning surfer’s feet for over 35 years. What started out as one man’s mission to improve upon the quality of sandals so many years ago has turned into a worldwide operation that has set the benchmark for quality, fit and comfort. Having a pair of Rainbows under your toes is indeed a special place to walk!
Jay “Sparky” Longley, founder and owner of Rainbow Sandals, and a Founding Partner and member of the Board of Directors for the Surfing Heritage Foundation, came up with a winning idea to not only equip a few more surfers feet, but to also provide a direct benefit to the Surfing Heritage’s mission of preserving the history and culture of surfing. Sparky’s program idea was to design a limited edition pair (1,000 pairs) of his famous sandals for the Surfing Heritage Foundation to use to help build its membership program and thus its preservation activities.
“This is a significant contribution to the Surfing Heritage Foundation and one that we are very appreciative to be a part of.” said, Dick Metz, Founder of the Surfing Heritage Foundation. Metz further states, “I know in my travels around the world that surfers tend to rely on certain things they get by on and one of those is a good pair of sandals, it’s the standard by which we all travel!”
In addition to the special Rainbow sandals, the Heritage has created a unique membership package that not only gets you the sandals but also provides a Surfing Heritage T-Shirt, a $10.00 Swell.com gift card, a year subscription to Transworld Surf, a 2010 Cooperfish Calendar featuring the boards being auctioned on ebay (20% of the proceeds go to Surfing Heritage), a bar of Sticky Bumps wax, decals and a one year membership to the Foundation.

John Coshland

This years S.C.L.U. Memorial Day Weekend Contest was another great event and a lot of fun for all! I had the honor and pleasure to be Team Captain for the contest, and I am very proud of the small but very talented team we took up there!
The contest was held in the most beautiful weather we could have asked for, mid 70's temp, bright sun and light wind. The waves were small and inconsistant but contestable. Saturday's waves were the best. They averaged about waist high, with occasional larger sets. Extreme tides played a factor both days and the wave conditions and the way they broke varied almost from minute to minute and all weekend long. Sunday we woke to very small surf that was made even more difficult to manage because of the tide changes from extremely low to a super fast filling high. In some heats the contestants had to take off right next to the cliff. Most waves were short in length, with occasional long rides through to the inside. If you got one of those, it was very good for your scores. Length of ride was a factor in the judging as well as how you surfed it. Wind was not a factor since Steamer Lane and Cowells were protected by he cliffs as usual.
I am very proud of our entire team. Everyone did their best to make the most of the challenging conditions. We had a strong group of surfers who worked hard and did the D.L.S.A. proud with their actions in and out of the water. All sharing their Aloha Spirit with the rest of our coalition friends. One of the reasons that I love going to the contests! The D.L.S.A. took 7th place overall because of the great surfing from our finalists. The Santa Cruz Contest is one of the most difficult ones to do well in because of the conditions, the difficulty of getting that break wired and all the local experts who surf in it. And because of that the S.C.L.U. won the overall trophy as well as the majority of the awards. Our
Individual finalists are as follows:
Menehune (Boys & Girls combined): Perry Rohr 1st, Chad Biggs 5th.
Jr. Men: Perry Rohr 3rd place.
Jr. Women: Hallie Rohr 2nd place
Women's: Rachael Calkins 5th, Hallie Rohr 6th
Team Captains Heat: Josh Raposo 3rd
Two Man Team Paddle Race (changed from the original format of 6): Gabe Fembres and Chad Biggs brought home 4th place for us. And I want you all to know that Chad did extremely great in the race. He jumped right in and filled in for Josh, and held our position through out the race. He was awesome jumping in and really helping out the club!
Gabe Fembres received a special award for highest score in the contest for an incredible wave in his first heat. Which is really impressive since there are so many really good surfers in all divisions!.
I judged for about 5 heats and we got 10 points for that too.
If we had better conditions and more contestants to fill our roster, we could have done even better. Sundays heats were very wave starved at times. But because of how much our guys rip, we did well with just the handful of contestants we had. And our team who did not make the finals all tried their hardest in the stacked heats and tough conditions. Even though that they may have not made the finals, most made it through the first rounds if not through to the semis. I am very proud of how everybody did to represent the club with skill, class and good sportsmanship, and all of you fellow members should be too! We should all thank them for making the long trip and doing us proud.
Besides the surfing we all had a great time. The groms had fun at the Boardwalk and hanging out with their friends from all the clubs. Julie Fembres was team Mom, feeding the kids and watching over them. Saturday night some of us went to the party at a new location from the previous years. And eight of us finished the very fun weekend with a team dinner at the Santa Cruz Diner on Sunday evening after the awards.
If you have never done the Santa Cruz Contest, I suggest that you do. It's always a lot of fun and a first class event put on by the Santa Cruz Club!

going on the east have of the road while we were trying to park and lug all
or stuff down the trail. The morning started off at 45 deg. at 6:00 AM but
quickly warmed up as the sun warmed us unlike previous Cardiac events of
yester-year. As we descended on the beach we were greeted with small but
glassy conditions. Most of the main heats were 30 minutes which gave us
time to catch plenty of waves. The glassy conditions lasted about 2 hours
when a slight WNW wind began. Did I say everyone had a good time? There
were about 25 of us hearty souls. Mark and Katie did their usual
outstanding job of organizing the heats on yellow paper. The heats were
started and stopped by using whistles we found in the shed. The time close
was Rachael Calkins cell phone. Many of us shared judging duties. Nancy
Grey did most if not all of the tabulating, there were no arguments over
judging or wave counts and we were done by 12:30 PM.
After the contest most made their way up to San Mateo Camp Ground, sites 28 and 30 were we had a wonderful pot luck lunch and an outstanding awards ceremony. I believe Mark Calkins got lots of pictures of the awards ceremony. Too bad we don't have video of the actual comments on the awards, but then again maybe it is best we don't.
Afterward we sat around telling tall tails of the big waves we have all

2010 Mickey Munoz Mongoose Cup was a huge success and fun for all!

The first ever Mickey Munoz Paddle Surf Fiesta held on March 13, 2010 at Baby Beach, Dana Point Harbor was very well attended and a lot of fun for all!
As part of the Dana Point Festival of Whales, The Mickey Muñoz Paddle Surf Fiesta began with a Fun Paddle around Dana Point Harbor Island led by our own Mickey Munoz. The Fun Paddle was launched after a vital “Rules of the Road” paddling safety meeting which was conducted by officials from Dana Point Harbor and the Orange County Sherriff Department’s Harbor Patrol. One of the reasons that the event was held is because of the increasing popularity of Stand Up Paddleboarding and the regulations enforced
“With the explosion of stand-up paddle boarding there are a lot more people paddling in the harbor. Safety and etiquette have become much more critical. Since Dana Point has become a Mecca for paddle sports, we wanted to have an event that’s message is about the importance of water safety and paddling etiquette” said surf legend Mickey Munoz.
“The County of Orange has always been on the cutting edge of boater safety and education and given the fact that Dana Point Harbor is a natural location for beginners on any type of human powered vessel it was obvious to us that we would introduce a common sense and easy to understand public program to ensure all the water enthusiast have the basic information to improve their safety while enjoying our Harbor and the local off shore waters." from Brad Gross, Director of Dana Point Harbor.
There was a paddleboarding trade show attended by some of the leading manufacturers of the industry. There was also good food, education and participation by hundreds of people whio love this fun family pastime!
Proceeds of the event directly benefitted the Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association (DSBIA), one of the many organizations that the D.L.S.A. endorses and supports.

2010 D.L.S.A. Church Beach, California
January 9 and 10, 2010.
While the eastern half of America suffered through a week-long historic arctic blast, Southern California enjoyed one of its best winter weekends yet. The 14th annual Gathering of The Tribes surf contest not only had perfect weather, but incredible waves as well.
Perhaps legendary surfer Henry Ford said it best, “We are blessed to be here, together we are enjoying what California is all about. It’s the perfect combination of friends and waves”.
The classic winter event is the annual kick-off program of the Coalition of Longboard Surf Clubs competitive season. With four to seven foot waves at Church Beach, one of California’s premiere point breaks, the almost flawless conditions provided an exceptional beginning to this year’s season. The surfing was inspired to say the least.
The contest featured a little bit of everything, from short boarding, stand up paddle surfing (SUP), longboarding, and tandem surfing. There was not a heat where someone surfing did not get an applause or big cheer from the beach.
The weekend program kicked off Friday evening at the Surfing Heritage Foundation where the Doheny Club donated a thousand dollars to the Foundation to help further its goals in preserving the history and culture of surfing. The competitive surfing award ceremonies were held throughout the weekend on the beach. For individual and team results, pictures and more, check Doheny club’s website at www.dohosurf.org.
The Coalition of Surfing Clubs (CSC) is an international organization that represents the interests of surfing clubs throughout California and the world. It acts as a united voice to address issues related to coastal water quality, beach access, development, and legislative policy. The Coalition represents over 10,000 surfers of all ages and exists for the betterment of the citizenship of the surfer, to improve clean water locally and globally and to promote the sport of surfing.
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association is an organization comprised of individuals dedicated to the enjoyment of board surfing in a clean and natural environment. Club Surf Day and Pot Luck Brunch at SanO was fun for all!
The surf day was really fun for everybody who attended. With beautiful weather, great food, and good friends. Santa even showed up and had fun with us all. The details about the day is best told in a story called...
"The Surf Day Before Christmas"
My alarm went of at a quarter past five and when I got there it was still dark,
I was one of the first to arrive.
As the sun slowly rose at the beach I adore, it was high tide, with some fun waves and the breeze was offshore.
Soon all the others began to arrive,
many warm greetings were shared, with hugs and high fives.

And from behind me I heard a grom cheer,
"It's Santa and Mrs. Claus, they're here! They're here!"

The groms sat with santa hugging his girth,
all telling him, "lets go Santa, lets go surf!"

"Hold on little ones, before you go nuts,
Santa is hungry and needs to have one of these doughnuts"
There was a lot of other good food and assorted yummies,
and soon Santa and the others had filled up their tummy's,
Santa waxed up his board so his feet wouldn't slip,
and called out to us all "Let's go rip!"

We all paddled out as the sun's warmth was felt,
at 75 degrees in December, even the wax snowman started to melt!
Everyone was surfing and having a ball,
many fun waves were had by all.
Chad Biggs streaked by his feet on the nose,

Mark Calkins doing the same and his ability shows.

Rachael Tilly's classic style and beauty so fair,

Perry Rohr ripping it up and boosting big air.

Everyone else had fun too it was said,
Billy Grey was so happy he carried his board on his head.

Santa got one, did a small hit to the lip,

did a drop knee cutback

and cross stepped to the tip.

His stoke was high as he perched on the nose,
he was so happy he struck up a pose,

And as he smiled and threw us all a double shaka,
he called out and wished everybody "Mele Kalikimaka!"

Merry Christmas to all from the
Doheny Longboard Surfing Association!

D.L.S.A. Competition Team does “ It’s all about the love “ The event was held at beautiful La Jolla Shores in San Diego. We were a small team with big Doheny spirit. The weather was cold, windy, and cloudy but thankfully dry. The sense of the holidays was in the crisp air. The beach break of La Jolla Shores was 2-4 foot, consentient and choppy. Not the best surf for nose riding or maneuvers. Our surfers made it work though, nose ridding in near to impossible sections. Pulling tricks in marginal conditions, braving the cold, waiting for results and their next heat. The dinner party Saturday night was at a café in the heart of La Jolla Village. We were served buffet style pasta, bread, salad, and vegetables. There was a DJ playing cool tunes throughout dinner. Special guest Shawn Thompson and Mike Hynson were there to meet and talk with. It was a fun evening of Coalition bonding. Huddling around a campfire on Sunday we all witnessed some great surfing from all the different clubs, ours included. The DLSA team received 3rd place overall. A nice accomplishment for a small, determined, talented team. Thank you to all who participated and came down to support our team. I hope to see you all at the Doheny Surf Day and potluck brunch on December 19th. Team Captain Katie Calkins

Swami’s 18th Annual Tommy Lewis Memorial, Oct. 10th and 11th
It wasn’t Cardiff Reef, oh no far from it, but it was surf and it was sunny!Swami’s decided to have their 2009 Coalition contest at Moonlight Beach, instead
of renowned Cardiff, mostly because of financial reasons. DLSA was up to the
challenge even though there was little to no surf. Of course DLSA is expert at
small surf, but we’re used to the good shape of Dohney’s perfect little peelers.
That’s not the wave of Moonlight’s beach break last weekend. The surf was
dumpy and small. Clean in the morning and choppy in the afternoon.
Most of the fun was on the beach, hanging out with friends and catching up on
stories. It’s always wonderful to meet with our fellow club members and the other
coalition clubbers. There were lots of pats on the back, high fives, and laughter,
mixed in fun and with serous expressions of competition. There was a new
addition to the team paddle relay this year. It was to start the relay with a SUP
person, then transfer to the waiting paddlers. Great idea and a lot of fun to watch.
Our paddling team finished with an out-of-breath 3rd place, quite respectable.
We had a surf team comprised of twenty surfers of all ages, and of that, sixteen
surfed their way to the finals to trophy! Some DLSA competitors even double-divisioned to help out our team, thank you so much! We were awarded 3rd place
as a team, a good reward for a weekend of comraderie. I want to say “thank you”
to everyone who came out to support DLSA… to watch, to surf, to paddle, to
feed, or to photograph our team. It’s all these Doheny Longboard Club members
that help our surf team to shred!!! I hope to see you all at the very last Coalition
event on December 5th, hosted by WindanSea at La Jolla Shores.
Muchas gracias, Katie Calkins

Victory at the Velzy
20th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau comes to a close
By Denny Michael special to the SC Times
The Doheny Longboard Surfing Association’s 20th Annual Dale Velzy Surf Classic and Luau is now in the record books. The event, held on September 26 at Doheny State Beach showcased everything from classic longboarding to the newer Stand Up Paddle (SUP) competition and more. Several inspired performances and great last minute clutch surfing capped off the one day event.
The men’s 20 to 29 age group featured over-the-top surfing from both Max Dexter and Bucky Barry of Dana Point who showcased incredible style and maneuvers in the smallish but fun surf. Dexter eventually won out over Barry—each showing incredible sportsmanship.
This year’s event consisted of two competitive surfing areas—SUP and Tandem—that were judged simultaneously by two separate judging stations.
The DLSA has held the Dale Velzy event for 20 years at Doheny State beach and it’s one of the most cherished events of the club’s year long schedule. This year’s program was no exception.
“This year’s event was especially exciting because we were able to add a SUP division that showed just how far the sport has come with their exceptional wave surfing abilities,” said Doheny Longboard Club President Nyles Schafhauser. “We love to pay homage to the great Dale Velzy every year as a remembrance to all the great things he did for surfing”.

Our talented surf team has done it again receiving 2nd place at Oceanside Pier last weekend. The Conditions were tough , small and glassy in the mornings, and small and choppy in the afternoons. The weather was beautiful though and y=the atmosphere thrilling. It’s always a pleasure spending the weekend rubbing shoulders with some of the finest Coalition surfers on the coast. And, tough competitors they are, but what a great group of people! Everyone encourages each other to perform at their best under such trying conditions. Our paddle team: Eli Gillis, Rubio Smith, Michelle Layton, Glen Tilly, Rick Carlisle, and Josh Rapozo killed it! They finished in 1st place a whole lap ahead of 2nd place Windansea! Wow!
Thank you for all who participated and drove to support the DLSA team. I hope you all had a great time!
